Katie Schripsema, MT-BC

Katie Schripsema is a board-certified music therapist and owner of Duke City Music Therapy, LLC.  She holds Bachelor’s degrees in Music Therapy and Flute Performance from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.  Originally from New Mexico, Katie is passionate about expanding awareness and bringing music therapy to her home state.

Before opening her private practice, Katie worked as a music therapy intern at The Center for Discovery in Harris, New York, as well as volunteered at the MSU Community Music School in East Lansing, Michigan.  She has experience working with a variety of populations including preschool children, children and adults with developmental disabilities and autism, children with physical impairments, and adults with a traumatic brain injury.

In addition to her work as a music therapist, Katie has taught private flute lessons and held studios in Michigan and New Mexico.  She continues to perform around the Albuquerque area, as well as work with local band programs, leading flute sectionals and judging competitions.  She is familiar with audition requirements for groups such as the Albuquerque Youth Symphony and New Mexico Allstate, and continually encourages her private students to be active members of the music community in New Mexico.

Katie loves to work with preschool children and has taught early childhood music classes in Michigan, New York, and New Mexico.  She believes that early childhood music experiences are a wonderful way to promote movement, coordination, self-expression and socialization, as well as pave the way for future music education.
